The Power of RED

September 6, 2015

Red.

In Russia, the word for "red" means beautiful.

I first fell in love with the colour, when my mother wore it. She has gleaming black hair and would paint her lips bright red and donned scarlet blouses with billowing sleeves in the 80’s. The colour was so stunning on her. It lifted her up, from “just my mom” into glossy, powerful, sophistication.

Humans can’t help but be drawn to red.  In ancient days red dye was rare and was extremely expensive…thus it was coveted.  Only the wealthy could afford to wear red,  I’m guessing that’s where the mystique and its power took root.  Perhaps it’s why we roll out the "red carpet" for VIPs?

In 2008, a study found that women who wore the colour red drove men wild. That study appeared in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. (insert The Lady in Red"  by Chris de Burgh here)

It’s the colour of passion and love and the colour of fire, it’s the colour of the blood that pumps through our veins.  It’s the colour of war. It’s the colour of danger.

Useless science fact:  Red captures attention. It is one of the most visible colors, second only to yellow - which explains why it is used on fire engines and stop signs.

Good girls don’t wear red….. Girls don’t wear red at all.  The colour is strictly for women who can command the colour with the same sultry confidence it deserves.

VOGUE SEPTEMBER ISSUE 2015 features an ad for this Versace dress. It's a stunner, but of course, nothing from the designer comes in plus sizes. I went on the hunt to try and find some beautiful red dresses for my readers to try! I think my finds are even prettier and alot more wearable!
